R. Kelly Denied Postponement In Child Pornography Trial

LATEST: R+B star R. KELLY has had a last-minute bid to postpone his child pornography trial denied.
Earlier this week (begs05May08), Kelly's lawyers submitted a new motion appealing to have the case temporarily delayed due to a recent "torrent of publicity" surrounding the case, which they feel could have a negative effect on the trial's outcome.
But a Chicago, Illinois judge dismissed Kelly's attorneys' request on Friday (09May08), when jury selection was due to start, and ruled trial proceedings will continue as planned - six years (02) after he was charged with having sex with a minor.
The 41-year-old has pleaded not guilty to 14 charges of child pornography, after a videotape emerged allegedly showing him having sex with an underage girl.
However, the trial looks to be a messy one - both Kelly and his now-23-year-old alleged sexual partner both insist it isn't them on the videotape.
Kelly faces up to 15 years in prison if he's convicted.

Girl Talk layers pricing on new release

Pay-what-you-want album available on Web site

NEW YORK -- As promised, Girl Talk's Gregg Gillis released his fourth record, "Feed the Animals," on Thursday via the Web site for his label, Illegal Art. As previously reported, "Animals" is available in a pay-what-you want format, with a few new options for fans to choose from.
At the $5-or-more level, buyers can choose to download the album in MP3 or FLAC format, the latter being exact copies of the original source files without compression. Also included is a single MP3 file featuring the music without track breaks.
At the $10-or-more level, consumers will get the above plus a physical CD when it becomes available this September. Fans can also choose to pay nothing for the music, which prompts a follow-up screen gauging the reason for doing so ("I may donate later," "I can't afford to pay," "I don't believe in paying for music," etc.).
The 14 tracks here continue Girl Talk's rich exploration and mashup of the annals of pop music. Fans have already launched a Wikipedia page detailing the hundreds of samples utilized, but among the most high-profile are the Police's "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic," the Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Under the Bridge," Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze," Michael Jackson's "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'," AC/DC's "Thunderstruck," Nirvana's "Lithium," Metallica's "One" and Temple Of The Dog's "Hunger Strike."
Those songs are blended with a wealth of contemporary pop and hip-hop songs from the likes of Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Kelly Clarkson, M.I.A., UGK, Avril Lavigne, Kanye West, Lil Mama, Britney Spears, Hot Chip, Flo Rida and R. Kelly.
"In my mind, it's a highlight reel of my live show since last year," Gillis said. "The core ideas are there, but what takes me a long time is just actually pushing them together. On record, it's like a different art form."
Girl Talk will play sporadic shows this summer, including Lollapalooza and the All Points West Festival. A headlining tour is in the works for the fall.
Here is the track list for "Feed the Animals":
"Play Your Part (Pt. 1)""Shut the Club Down""Still Here""What It's All About""Set It Off""No Pause""Like This""Give Me a Beat"Hands in the Air""In Step"Let Me See You""Here's the Thing""Don't Stop""Play Your Part (Pt. 2)"

"Wanted" an audacious adrenaline rush

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - It's good to be "Wanted."

The debut American feature by successful Kazakhstan director Timur Bekmambetov ("Night Watch" and its record-smashing 2006 sequel, "Day Watch"), this over-the-top, ultraviolent, hyperkinetic action thriller pretty much has it all.

That would include engagingly offbeat source material in the form of Mark Millar and J.G. Jones' comic book series, a decent adaptation by Michel Brandt and Derek Haas (last year's "3:10 to Yuma" remake) and Chris Morgan ("Cellular"), a terrific cast and jaw-dropping stunt work.

Then there's the visually charged talents of Bekmambetov -- a man who has funneled the best of the Wachowski brothers, Quentin Tarantino and contemporary Hong Kong action movies through his own wry sensibility.

Capably establishing the anything-goes tone of the Los Angeles Film Festival in its capacity as Thursday's official curtain-raiser, the Universal guilty pleasure should make plenty of noise, especially with young males, when it opens nationally on June 27.

James McAvoy, sporting a swell American accent, is certain to build on his big-screen appeal as Wesley Gibson, a put-upon account executive who discovers that his long-absent father belonged to a centuries-old league of supersensory assassins known as the Fraternity.

It also turns out that Gibson is a chip off the old block in the killing department, but before he can avenge his father's death, he must get into fighting shape with a little help from the Fraternity's Zen master of a leader, Sloane (Morgan Freeman), and tough-cookie Fox (Angelina Jolie, in sinewy "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" mode).

The three of them prove to be colorful assets in a film where even the bullets seem to have a personality all their own.

Academy Sets New Rules For Foreign Pics

Apparently concerned about the fact that some foreign films that received honors at leading film festivals and were praised by critics never received nominations for foreign-language Oscars, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revised its method of selecting nominees. In the future, an "executive committee" will be able to add three films to those selected by academy voters, and a second committee will then select the five nominees from the expanded list. The academy also voted to limit the number of songs from a single movie competing in the original song category to two, hoping to avoid a repeat of past situations where three nominated songs from a movie competed against one another, thereby dividing the votes so that none won.
